Natural Disasters

  • Ss rotate between three stations: a quiz station, a book station and a video/website rotation
  • Ss will rotate for 20 minutes on each station and will be responsible for finishing a task at each:
  • They will be in mixed ability groupings.

Earthquake Study
Things we know:
Earth shakes --> buildings fall
When two tectonic plates hit one another
It is a natural disaster
Causes a massive rumble
Richter Scale is used to measure it
They can cause Volcanoes to erupt
Can cause pollution when buildings fall down

Option 3:
Things we want to find out?
Does the Earth's core spin or shake?
Why do tectonic plates move?
What is the degree of the Earth's core when it heats up and causes an earthquake?
Why don't they always happen?
How many tectonic plates are there in the world?
How do buildings fall from earthquakes when they are strong?
How long do earthquakes last for?
Why doesn't Australia have earthquakes?
What country experiences the most earthquakes?
Did an earthquake separate Australia from Tasmania?
Do earthquakes separate land?
What is the percentage of people that die each year from earthquakes?
How rare are earthquakes on Earth?

Station 1: Quizzes
Ss must try and do as many quizzes as possible. Write down 15-20 things you have learnt.

Station 2: Videos:
Ss must find good videos or websites and watch them about Earthquakes. They must write down 15- 20 points about what you have learnt.

Station 1: Quiz
Ss must try and do as many quizzes as possible. They do not have to finish a task per say on this station.

Station 2: Books (Shared book in science folder, log on to oliver and search volcano ebook)

Ss must write down 10-20 things they have learnt about Volcanoes, especially about the way they are formed.

Station 3: Videos:
Ss must find good videos on Youtube and watch them about Volcanoes. They must write down 10-20 points about what they have learnt.

Space

  1. In pairs, watch two videos about the solar system and access two reliable websites.
  2. Write in your workbooks the answers to the following questions:

  1. What is the Solar System and what are its main features?

  1. How long does each planet take to orbit around the sun? What is an orbit?

  1. Using the website below, find out everything you can about the solar system. You will need to write down what you found interesting into your workbooks.  You will then be required to create either a small speech, a play, a poster, a Google presentation, an advertisement, a song, an interview with a friend or another way to show what you have learnt. You will also need to explain what is an orbit and really answer the two questions above. As an extension, you may also like to choose your favourite planet and become an expert on that planet and tell us all about it.
